About this course

If you’re interested in a career in ship or port operations and management, or in logistics, freight forwarding, supply chain management, port agency or terminal operations, this in-depth course is for you.

The international shipping industry comprises over 100,000 vessels and hundreds of ports worldwide, carrying around 90 per cent of world trade and backed by the large international marine services sector. The industry employs thousands of people worldwide in a huge number of roles, from ship and port management to finance, law, insurance, ship broking and ship agency services.

The subjects you will study on this degree will equip you for a successful career in this dynamic and exciting industry.

Course content

Year 1

Six core units:

  • Shipping Law 
  • Maritime Transport 
  • Navigation and Meteorology 
  • Maritime Trade 
  • Maritime Business 
  • Maritime Economics.

Year 2

Five core units and one option unit: 

  • Research Methods and Proposal 
  • Management of Organisations 
  • Transport Operations 
  • Ship Operations 
  • Port Management.
  • Options: 
  • Managing Financial Information 
  • Curriculum Plus.

Year 3

Four core units and two option units: 

  • Marine Issues 
  • Strategic Management and Marketing 
  • Terminal Operations 
  • Maritime Logistics.

Options: 

  • Project 
  • Marine Finance

    OR

  • Extended Project (double unit).

Assessment

Coursework and presentations (both individual and group), navigation and manoeuvring practical exercises afloat, a dissertation in the final year and examinations.
