The city of Southampton has five art galleries, including the University's own Millais Gallery.  Along with cinemas, nightclubs, restaurants and bars, there are also two theatres – The Mayflower stages top West End shows, musicals and ballet, and The Nuffield Theatre frequently previews plays destined for London's West End.

Southampton is home to some of the largest yachting marinas on the South Coast, holding Europe's biggest on-water boat show each September and hosting major sailing events.

The area around Southampton is an exciting region of historic towns, beautiful countryside and miles of coastline. Winchester is a historic cathedral town, while Portsmouth has a long and distinguished naval history. The New Forest is a short drive from Southampton and offers 145 square miles of open heath and woodland, which is great for walking, horse riding, and cycling.

If you enjoy playing sport, there are numerous leisure centres throughout the city, with the usual facilities, but you can also find a dry ski slope, athletics track, and municipal golf course. For rainy days, you can enjoy a swim at The Quays, which offers student concessions, or go to Hollywood Bowl at Westquay Watermark for some ten pin bowling.

You can also watch premier league football at St Mary's Stadium, home to Southampton FC, or first-class cricket at Hampshire's Ageas Bowl, which also has a leisure centre and tennis courts.
