Sports and leisure

Facilities - Sports and LeisureThere are a wide range of leisure and sporting activities to enjoy at Warsash, Solent University, and in Southampton and the surrounding areas.

The city of Southampton has five art galleries, including the University's own Millais Gallery.  Along with cinemas, nightclubs, restaurants and bars, there are also two theatres – The Mayflower stages top West End shows, musicals and ballet, and The Nuffield Theatre frequently previews plays destined for London's West End.

Southampton is home to some of the largest yachting marinas on the South Coast, holding Europe's biggest on-water boat show each September and hosting major sailing events.

The area around Southampton is an exciting region of historic towns, beautiful countryside and miles of coastline. Winchester is a historic cathedral town, while Portsmouth has a long and distinguished naval history. The New Forest is a short drive from Southampton and it offers 145 square miles of open heath and woodland, which is suitable for walking, horse riding, and cycling.

We have a fully equipped health studio and gym on campus, with personal fitness trainers, boxing and fitness classes.  A choice of bicycles and an extensive range of sports equipment (eg, for football, rugby, volleyball, softball, badminton, snooker etc) is also available on a deposit basis. Please note: As part of Solent's phased relocation of Warsash Maritime Academy to Southampton city centre, the gym and fitness suite will be closed on 31 July 2017. The facility will remain open for use under its usual monthly membership terms until then. If you have any queries, please contact solent.sport.@solent.ac.uk.

If you enjoy playing sport, there are numerous leisure centres throughout the city, with the usual facilities, but you can also find a dry ski slope, athletics track, and municipal golf course. For rainy days, you can enjoy a swim at The Quays Swimming and Diving Complex, which offers student concessions.

You can also watch premier league football at St Mary's Stadium, home to Southampton FC or first-class cricket at Hampshire's Ageas Bowl, which also has a leisure centre and tennis courts.
