Generic ECDIS certificate now required for OOW (Yachts) CoC

The MCA has recently indicated that a generic ECDIS certificate will be required for the issue of an OOW (Yachts Less Than 3,000GT) Certificate of Competency from 31 March 2015.

An M notice has yet to be issued by the MCA, however we noticed that the Notice of Eligibility form (MSF 4343 / REV 11 15) states:

"OOW Yacht Officers not meeting the above ECDIS requirement will receive the following limitation: “From the 1 January 2017 this certificate is not valid for service on ships fitted with ECDIS.

However, after 31st March 2015 all Yacht OOW applicants will need to submit an MCA approved ECDIS Certificate prior to the issue of their CoC."

Note, that a generic ECDIS certificate has already been required to obtain a Chief Mate (Yachts Less Than 3,000GT) Certificate of Competency since 31 December 2013.

We will update you when the relevant M notice is issued.
