Engineer Cadet - Higher National Certificate Programme

About this course

Please note: we are not currently running this programme. Please refer to the Engineer Cadet Foundation Degree programme or the Engineer Cadet Higher National Diploma programme.

The Academy offers a full engineer officer cadet programme by a Higher National Certificate (HNC) route, leading ultimately to the award of an MCA Engineer Officer’s Certificate of Competency (STCW III/I OOW), and the award of the Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Marine Engineering.

The award of the Higher National Diploma (HND) in Marine Engineering can later be achieved following successful completion of HND Level 5 units.

The scheme consists of five phases (usually over three years), three spent at the Academy and two at sea gaining practical experience. The training consists of four distinct but complementary elements:

  • An HE entry course at Warsash, designed to prepare new entrants for study at HNC level.
  • Academic education at Warsash to attain the HNC in Marine Engineering and the Underpinning Knowledge (UPK) requirements for the MCA/SQA written examinations.
  • Practical training on board ship, including completion of an MNTB Training Record Book. This enables candidates to develop the professional competency needed for initial certification by the MCA.
  • In addition to the academic studies, the MCA requires officer cadets to take a number of safety and survival courses during their cadetship.
